French Leather Artisans: The LUC8K Atelier

Behind every LUC8K piece is a story that begins long before the finished bag reaches its owner.

It begins with leather, skilled hands and knowledge that has been refined and passed from one generation to the next.

In a world where speed and mass production have become normal, traditional leather craftsmanship follows a very different rhythm. Every cut, stitch, edge and finishing detail requires attention. The goal is not simply to produce something quickly. It is to create something that feels considered, personal and built to last.

We spoke with Edouard, one of the artisans behind LUC8K, about his relationship with leather, the traditions behind his craft and what it means to continue making products by hand.

A Craft Passed From Generation to Generation

LUC8K: How did your journey in leather craftsmanship begin?

Edouard: Well, it was through my family really. We have been working in the leather industry for several generations, and it's an absolute blessing to be born into a business that is so treasured, so traditional, and it must be said, very rare these days.

LUC8K: Is this a skill passed down, or a path you chose independently?

Edouard: We pass this knowledge, skill and passion down from generation to generation, so it's in our blood. It's something we can't escape, but it's also something I wouldn't want to ever leave. I can't imagine doing anything else, and I'm so proud to be carrying on the tradition and artistry of what my family have been doing for decades.

LUC8K: Do you remember the first piece you crafted by hand?

Edouard: Yes, perfectly; it was a leather origami piece shaped like a bull. I remember it like yesterday, but every piece I craft feels the same. When it's finished, I always have the same sense of pride.

LUC8K: What drew you specifically to leather, rather than other materials?

Edouard: Beyond the family tradition, working with leather is a craft that goes beyond merely manufacturing an object. It involves creating something unique that can sometimes be likened to art. Leather is like no other material on earth. The way it feels. The way it smells. The way it looks, and like a fine wine, it gets better over time.

What True Craftsmanship Means

LUC8K: What does "true craftsmanship" mean to you today?

Edouard: True craftsmanship exists the moment you make a product by hand. What we do here differs from industrial production through the artisan's close attention to every single step of the process. It's all about the details, and we are obsessed with the details.

LUC8K: In a world dominated by speed and automation, what keeps you committed to traditional methods?

Edouard: I would say our passion. Crafting an item from start to finish and watching the product take shape, that is what is so exciting. So captivating. And so rewarding. Not just for the people that buy the bags we make, but for us too.

“With artisanal craftsmanship, every step is carried out meticulously to ensure excellent quality.”

LUC8K: How do you define the difference between something that is simply manufactured and something that is artisanal?

Edouard: The difference lies in time and care. With artisanal craftsmanship, every step is carried out meticulously to ensure excellent quality. In the industry, yield must be the top priority. It's all about speed, cutting costs, cutting corners. With us, we just want perfection, and that takes time and effort.

Choosing the Right Leather

Choosing the material is one of the earliest decisions that can determine how the finished piece will look, feel and age.

LUC8K: Is there a specific philosophy or mindset you adopt when working with leather?

Edouard: Yes, every step must be executed perfectly. Leather is a precious material, and it has to be treated as such. We only have artisans who know, appreciate, and love the process of turning a hide into something that lasts a lifetime.

LUC8K: Can you explain the importance of choosing the right hide?

Edouard: Using the wrong leather for a product can completely change the final result. You need the right level of rigidity or suppleness, and the right finish. Anything less than perfection will result in something we are not proud of, and something no one will be 100% happy with.

LUC8K: What distinguishes full grain leather or premium bull leather from other types?

Edouard: Full grain leather comes from the top layer of the hide because it is the most durable part of the leather. Premium bull leather is thick and strong. I always prefer bull leather.

LUC8K: What do you instinctively look for when touching a piece of raw leather?

Edouard: I look for its suppleness, then assess its quality through handling. This allows me to quickly determine whether the leather will age well or wear out prematurely.

From Raw Hide to Finished Leather

LUC8K: Can you describe the journey of a piece, from raw hide to the finished bag or belt?

Edouard: The raw hide is tanned to become leather. Once it arrives at the workshop, it is inspected to ensure it meets our quality standards. Following this inspection, the manufacturing of the bag or belt can begin.

LUC8K: What is the longest step in the process?

Edouard: Tanning is a very lengthy process. Believe it or not, it could take anywhere from several weeks to several months, depending on the desired finish.

LUC8K: How important is patience in achieving the final result?

Edouard: I mentioned earlier, craftsmanship requires meticulousness, and achieving that level of precision absolutely demands patience. Just ask my wife!

LUC8K: Are there moments in the process where instinct takes precedence over technique?

Edouard: Instinct and technique are inextricably linked. Mastering the technique allows you to react instinctively in the right way.

The Character of Hand Finishing

LUC8K: What role does hand finishing play in achieving depth and character?

Edouard: Hand finishing creates subtle nuances that make every piece unique, something absent from industrial processes, where everything is standardized and fixed. We absolutely insist on doing everything by hand, and it's always been this way.

LUC8K: How does the leather evolve over time and with use?

Edouard: It varies depending on the leather and the finish. Some leathers wear down and crack, while others develop a patina in areas of movement. We know that the leather used to create LUC8K bags gets better with age, and this is the same with most bags and pieces we make.

The Details That Make It LUC8K

Small details can be some of the most recognizable parts of a finished piece. Branding, finishing and placement all happen after the material itself has already passed through numerous stages of preparation.

These finishing details may appear small, but they represent the same philosophy that runs through the entire process: nothing is treated as an afterthought.

Where Precision Matters Most

LUC8K: Which part of the process demands the highest level of precision?

Edouard: Definitely stitching. A single missed stitch means the entire product has to be redone, and we do absolutely everything possible to not go through this painful process!

This is one of the clearest examples of why traditional craftsmanship cannot simply be measured by speed. Every stitch contributes to the finished piece, and the smallest detail matters.

LUC8K: How long does it take to truly master this craft?

Edouard: It takes several years to truly master this craft. A lot of blood, sweat and tears, but mostly passion, hard work, and attention to detail. Not everyone can do this, and that's why not many people do it. It is a craft that very few people on earth can master. And I'm OK with that!

A Personal Connection to Every Piece

LUC8K: Do you form a bond with the pieces you create?

Edouard: Absolutely. There is nothing more satisfying than crafting a product to perfection, especially knowing the joy it will bring when it is finally packed and delivered to its owner, wherever they are in the world.

It's like building a beautiful house or a luxury car. You know the work that went into it, but you also know the joy it will bring for generations to come. It's a nice feeling for me, and without it, I don't think I could do what I do.

LUC8K: What do you hope the wearer feels when wearing a LUC8K piece?

Edouard: I hope they know and appreciate that a LUC8K piece is not just an object. It is not something off the shelf. It is something steeped in history and craftsmanship. To us, each piece is a work of art.

I also hope they know that every LUC8K bag is a one off. Totally unique, and not just crafted by us, it is designed by them.

Preserving Heritage in a Changing World

LUC8K: Is there a sense of heritage in your work?

Edouard: We create pieces that are built to last, and it is important for the products to span generations. We are so proud of our history, our traditional way of doing things, and it gives us great pleasure to make bags that we know will last a lifetime.

LUC8K: How do you balance heritage techniques with contemporary design?

Edouard: Contemporary design evolves very quickly, so we have to adapt without changing our fundamental way of working. It doesn't make a difference what the design is, or what the color is, we can make it work so long as we do it the way we have always done. The right way.

LUC8K: Do you think traditional craftsmanship is at risk of disappearing?

Edouard: No, quite the opposite. There is growing demand for products made using traditional methods. We are always busy, too busy sometimes, but that's because people come to us for products that are of exquisite quality.

Passing the Craft Forward

LUC8K: What role do younger generations play in preserving this craft?

Edouard: They are the future of the trade. It is important to keep the tradition of passing on expertise alive, and we have always done that with the younger generation.

This is not for everyone, but for the few that are good enough, it is a craft, a career, a hobby, a lifetime job that brings so much joy. Hard work, but satisfying at the end of the day.

LUC8K: Can innovation exist without compromising tradition?

Edouard: Yes; in fact, one must always innovate. Without innovation, it is harder to keep tradition alive.

More Than a Material

LUC8K: What does leather represent to you, beyond just the material itself?

Edouard: Leather is a living material. It comes from an animal, so it must be respected.

LUC8K: If you had to describe your craft in a single word, which would you choose, and why?

Edouard: Heritage. Because it's not just about what we make. It's about the knowledge, the techniques and the passion that are passed down from one generation to the next.

“The pursuit of excellence, the human touch, and the pride of creating something with one's own hands that will outlast us.”

LUC8K: What would you like the world to understand about artisanal leatherwork?

Edouard: That behind every object lies genuine craftsmanship and the time invested in completing every single step of the process. And we will go on forever, I hope!

LUC8K: What remains unchanged, no matter how the world evolves?

Edouard: The pursuit of excellence, the human touch, and the pride of creating something with one's own hands that will outlast us.

A Craft Designed to Outlast Us

Perhaps the most beautiful thing about traditional craftsmanship is that it isn't really about looking backwards.

It is about carrying something forward.

Techniques evolve. Designs change. Colors come and go. But the pursuit of excellence, the human touch and the pride of making something by hand remain.

That is what we hope you feel when you carry a LUC8K piece. You are not simply carrying a beautiful object. You are carrying something shaped by skilled hands, traditional knowledge and countless small decisions that most people will never see.

It is a little piece of history, made especially for you and made to last long enough to become part of someone else's story too.
