What is Sustainable Leather?

There’s nothing like the look, the feel, the versatility, and even the smell of real sustainable leather. Its popularity is a testament to the wearability and attractiveness of high-quality leather goods. In style and strength, it can last for generations. Simply put, faux leather is not to last.

However, leather production can be a concern to those who want to purchase sustainable leather goods. There was a time when sustainable leather was an oxymoron. Still, thanks to improvements in production methods throughout the supply chain, it is now a reality. Through humane treatments of animals, new tanning processes. and the humane treatment of those who work with leather goods. At LUC8K, we produce our handmade leather goods sustainably.

Sustainable Leather Comes In Many Forms

Sustainability takes many forms. For example, it takes into account social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and corporate ethics. For the leather industry, how animals are treated and how people are treated are equally important.

Sustainability is a choice. As individuals, we have excellent power base on the choices we make in our daily lives. It’s worth the fashion industry to have picked up the fashion trend to make sustainable fashion.

Ethical Fashion To Take On Environmental Initiatives

Being ethical and eco-friendly is suddenly becoming socially acceptable again. Fashion brands are aware that billions are involved in this business. And how they make money with it. Yes, there is a lot of Greenwashing. And Yes, we manufacture leather bags and leather accessories in France.

And the bloody trail created by leather bags, shoes, and car seats may lead back to the Amazon or India, Bangladesh, and China. Not as far as we are concerned: we strive to offer transparency because transparency is a prerequisite for sustainability. Unfortunately, uncertainty still reigns because the market is global. Large quantities of leather, vegan leather, and leather goods are being dumped onto the market. Tanneries may cause high environmental impact and make them responsible for generating large amounts of wastewater with high toxic chemicals concentration. That is why we find it critically important to know our suppliers personally and work with tanneries that incorporate wastewater recycling into the tanning process. This only happens in Europe.

European suppliers’ & Sustainable Leather

We take full advantage of European suppliers’ capability to produce our bags. Using sustainable methods throughout the entire manufacturing process – all the way through to the packaging that they use to ship our products all over the world. Another critical factor is that each bag is crafted by hand. We procure everything we need to produce our bags in Europe: the leather, the lining, the thread, the rivets, the zips, the magnets even the gold thread. “Made in France” is prestigious, and the production location in France embodies savoir-faire.

The United Nations provided the most agreed-upon definition of sustainable development in 1987. It includes the following:

“development that meets the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts: first was the concept of ‘needs,’ the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and second, the idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.”

LUC8K aspires to these goals of sustainable development. Its leather comes from Bull Poney, selected from the finest breeding areas in France and Europe. The animal skins are then tanned through a mineral process and then dip-dyed. The result is a process that is fully sustainable while producing leather that shows the marks and original features of the living material. After tanning, LUC8K custom leather goods are handmade in France, a place historically known for producing exceptional handmade goods. Workers throughout the process are given a fair wage and work in safe, wholesome environments. Unfortunately, the way LUC8K crafts its high-quality leather products is not how it is made worldwide.

In future stories, LUC8K will explain each step in the leather-producing process. That allows you to come inside to see how we do it, why we do it, and explain the benefits. In the end, disclosure is perhaps the most
critical part of sustainability. The proof is in seeing. At LUC8K, we are happy to get you as close to the production of our handmade leather goods as possible. Please read our Handling and Care information as well.
